Couture Measurement Guide

For made-to-measure pieces, share these measurements at checkout. Take them over form-fitting clothing, with help if you can, and keep to one tape throughout.

# Measurement How to take it
1 Around chest The fullest part of the chest, under the arms.
2 Around stomach The widest part of the stomach.
3 Around waist The natural waistline, above the belly button.
4 Neck to waist Vertically from the base of the neck to the waistline.
5 Around neck The base of the neck, where a collar sits.
6 Neck to shoulder From the base of the neck to the shoulder tip.
7 Shoulder to wrist From the shoulder tip to the wrist bone.
8 Armhole to wrist From the armpit to the wrist.
9 Around arm The fullest part of the upper arm.
10 Around hand The widest part of the hand, excluding the thumb.
11 Around wrist Around the wrist bone.
12 Around hip The fullest part of the hips and seat.
13 Around thigh The fullest part of the thigh.
14 Around leg (shin) The widest part of the lower leg.
15 Around ankle The narrowest part of the ankle.
16 Seat to ankle Vertically from the seat to the ankle bone.
17 Knee to ankle From the centre of the knee to the ankle bone.
18 Waist to ankle From the waistline to the ankle bone.
19 Height From the top of the head to the floor, standing straight.
20 Shoulder to shoulder Across the back, shoulder tip to shoulder tip.
21 Across back Across the back, armpit to armpit.
22 Around knee Around the centre of the kneecap.
23 Suit length From the top of the shoulder to the length you want.

Measurement tips

  • Assistance — have someone help you, for accuracy.
  • Posture — stand straight and relaxed, feet together.
  • Clothing — wear form-fitting clothing or undergarments.
  • Consistency — use the same tape throughout.
